Choosing a Ceramic Dental Implant

I’m attending a Ceramic Dental Implant Conference in Zurich. The evidence for ceramic Implantology has accelerated in the last 3 years and I’m very glad that I have been placing ceramic implants since 2017.

So the question will be why does a patient need to choose a metal free dental implant versus a conventional titanium implant.

Here are some scenarios where a ceramic implant would be regarded as a good tooth replacement option and were described by the speakers at the Zeramex ceramic implant conference.

Scenario 1: Metal Allergy

A 35-year-old female patient with a known history of metal allergies, including sensitivity to nickel and cobalt, is seeking a dental implant to replace a missing tooth. She is concerned about the possibility of an allergic reaction to a titanium implant. She reads about zirconia implants, which are metal-free and biocompatible, and decides to choose a zirconia implant to avoid potential complications associated with metal allergies.

Scenario 2: Aesthetics

A 28-year-old male patient is seeking a dental implant for a missing front tooth. He is concerned about the appearance of the implant and wants it to blend in seamlessly with the rest of his teeth. After reading about zirconia implants, which are tooth-colored and can provide a more natural look compared to titanium implants, he decides that zirconia is the better choice for his cosmetic needs.

Scenario 3: Gum Recession Concerns

A 45-year-old female patient has a history of gum recession and is worried about the potential for further gum loss around the implant site. She reads that zirconia implants are less likely to cause gum discoloration and can help maintain healthy gums due to their smooth surface. As a result, she opts for a zirconia implant to minimize the risk of gum issues.

Scenario 4: Holistic Approach to Health

A 40-year-old male patient is interested in holistic dental care and seeks an implant material that aligns with his philosophy of minimizing his exposure to metals. He discovers that zirconia implants are metal-free and biocompatible, making them an ideal option for his health-conscious mindset. He chooses a zirconia implant to maintain harmony with his body and promote overall wellness.

Scenario 5: Concerns about Corrosion

A 50-year-old female patient has read about the potential for corrosion and galvanic reactions with titanium implants. Although rare, she is concerned about these risks and wishes to avoid any potential complications. After researching her options, she learns that zirconia implants are resistant to corrosion and do not cause galvanic reactions. She decides that a zirconia implant is the safer choice for her dental needs.

Whilst ceramic implants are clearly advancing dental Implantology they still remain expensive due to the smaller volume of implants manufactured globally.
